Dropping Bazar, Yuty and Commitment. Simi Lindgren reflects on the past 12 months and Yuty’s mission to help you find the right beauty products that will work for you.
It’s a year today since we launched our MVP, yutybazar.com. 25 August 2020, the first day of Yuty’s future. It’s so incredibly humbling to look back on the past 12 months to where we are today. When I made the decision to go on this journey, I didn’t know where it would lead, but I knew I wanted to create a destination, where everyone could be empowered by beauty products that worked for them as individuals, which would be our contribution to making the world a better place. That mission is still what drives us today.
We have been fortunate enough to have been supported by family, friends, team, investors and advisors who not only respect our mission but the innovation we intend to bring to the benefit of others. There is no one-size-fits-all solution philosophy in beauty, something that many have heard me say time and again. Skincare, haircare and cosmetic products made for defined characteristics such as balanced or oily, straight or dyed, mocha or porcelain. Yuty aims to understand and recognise us all not just on our genetic attributes but lifestyle, environment, preferences and more to match us with products that will perform and empower.
We launched with 14 brands, brands that are truly wonderful and driven by the same mission, values and ethos that we hold true. We now have 5x the number of brands on Yuty, a new site. We have dropped the bazar (a little more about that on our Instagram) and have improved the way we match you to products through the Yuty Advisor™ and YutyBot™. This evolution came in response to your valuable feedback. We could talk about Artificial Intelligence until we were blue in the face, but Yuty (pronouns she/her) although driven by AI like Siri, like Alexa, she wants to help you find the perfect match to a lipstick, a cleanser, a pre-shampoo - we want to put you in beauty, by getting to know you, it’s in our manifesto. But how does she do this? Over the past 12 months, we have been working hard on our Machine Learning and Deep Learning algorithms which look at various genetic, lifestyle and environmental factors, supported by questions which you would answer, in the same way you would a beauty professional. This wasn’t always easy. The anthropomorphism of Yuty, the rebrand, the testing and validation of models, honestly it was tough, but our sole purpose defied the battles. Ensuring that Yuty matched you to products that would empower and perform, that would work, to reduce that trial and error and the enormous amounts of waste both financial and environmental.
So as we embark on the next phase of Yuty’s journey, and you have gotten to know a little about Yuty, it’s only right to tell you a little about me, the voice behind Yuty. Born in the year that the world wide web was created, I am a mother of 2 who has been married for nearly a decade. My lived experiences of not being able to find the right beauty products has shaped Yuty, but what has driven myself and in turn Yuty has been technology, more specifically AI. It is my belief that building sustainable AI, that recognises everyone, will not only drive social equity but reduce waste, leaving the world in a better state for future generations. AI is being used in beauty to drive next level personalisation so that we can all have a better shopping experience, but what differentiates Yuty is the ability to recognise all different types of people in a way that isn’t being delivered today. How do I know it’s not being delivered? From you, those who have tried finding the right foundation match, or cleanser, who have less than desirable experiences due to limitations of data and those building and deploying those technologies. I am Black, living in a diverse household from a diverse family, so it was important that Yuty was also diverse so that we can match you to products in a meaningful and sustainable way.
So what’s our plan? To continue to build, and deploy features that allow us to do that. To introduce you to brands on Yuty, the conscious and inclusive beauty marketplace that align with your individual values whilst being planet friendly. We’re focussed on not only improving Yuty's technology, the way you navigate Yuty, your experience of Yuty, but our relationships with you, our customers, because through our trials and tribulations, it was you that continued to use Yuty, take her recommendations, support Yuty brands through purchase that allowed us to see growth.
We will continue to harness the power of Artificial Intelligence, to deliver personalised experiences to you globally through the Yuty Advisor, through YutyBot and through search on Yuty.me, to better help you make the most informed decisions that allow you to feel empowered and shop sustainably.
