4 Step Beauty Routine to Help with Sleep and Slow Ageing

"The shorter your sleep, the shorter your life span."

In 'Why We Sleep: Unlocking the Power of Sleep and Dreams' by respected sleep professor and researcher Matthew Walker, extensive research, people stories, clinical studies and statistical evidence is presented, making an irrefutable case for sleep as a necessity for health, longevity and brain function. Yet, often a few extra dabs of concealer or foundation are used to, quite literally, cover up the problem. Inspired by the Festival of Sleep Day on the 3rd of January, we at Yuty encourage you to rethink sleep—and consider adopting a broader view of your daily beauty regime to support better rest.

1. Turn off or minimise blue light exposure 1 hour before intended bedtime.

By reducing your blue light exposure, your body receives the signal it is time for rest. Blue light emits from digital screens, mobile devices, LED and fluorescent lighting. When you turn it all off, melatonin production will increase and set you on the path toward sleepiness, as nature intended.

Blue light interrupts our melatonin production, a necessary trigger for winding down. Blue light's rays also increase the rate of ageing by causing oxidative stress to the body. When we age, the ability to repair DNA damage from oxidative stress decreases, leading to fine lines, wrinkles, reduced elasticity, uneven skin tone, dry skin, hyperpigmentation and visible pores. Not to worry, Yuty recommends products such as náu Anti-Blue Light Serum powered by Ectoin® Face Serum for all skin types.

Blue light's connection to sleep and beauty is thus twofold. First, lack of rest means poorer brain and physical function. Second, the additional exposure to blue light makes us look (and feel—consider those tired eyes!) older.

After turning off all devices, light a candle to transform the daytime aura into a soft, dim, easygoing atmosphere.

Phena London

2. Devote time to simple meditation with aromatherapy each night.

Experience natural aromatics through air diffusers, steam herbs from pots of boiling water or apply heavenly-scented moisturisers directly onto the skin. Cortisol and adrenaline—stress hormones vital to helping you get through the day—will reduce. As your heart rate slows and breathing evens out, enticed by the delicate scents you've chosen, your body and mind calm down, quieting racing thoughts and productive impulses.

3. After bathing in the evening, use antioxidant body creams and serums and give yourself a brief massage.

By opting for a modest luxury over practicality, your body receives permission to relax. Massages elicit the parasympathetic nervous system response, promoting rest, increasing dopamine and endorphin levels, and helping improve mood and decrease pain. A gentle daily massage of stubborn sore areas (consider back, shoulders, feet, or forearms) will reduce stress and lead to greater comfort while in bed.

4. Enjoy bath soaks in the evenings— ( Writer, Orchid recommends about three times a week.)

Note from Founder Simi Lindgren: There is conflicting information on how to bathe sustainably. In the UK, a 5 minute shower uses about a third of water when compared to a bath (according to the Environment Agency). Although, in homes with power showers which can use up to 136l of hot water, that’s more than twice the amount of water, when compared to a 60l bath.

Bath soaks combine the best of aromatherapy, skin nourishment, muscle relaxation and heat. It's commonly thought that warm soaks help prepare the body to relax due to the warmth, but actually, cooling down after rising from the tub is what sets the tone for rest. The hot bath invites blood to the surface of your skin, giving you a flushed appearance. After exiting the bath, the dilated blood vessels on the surface quickly help radiate out inner heat, and the core body temperature plummets. Consequently, you fall asleep with ease because your core is cooler.

When using a naturally formulated soak, your skin also benefits from antioxidant and nutritional ingredients. Dead skin cells are exfoliated, and dry skin is moisturised, helping the skin cells cycle and renew.
